Carlos Scaramuzza
Brazilian biologist with a PhD in Ecology from the University of São Paulo, with over 30 years of professional experience in biodiversity conservation. This includes the development of public policies, research and project management involving vegetation ecology, land use dynamics and conservation biology, with extensive use of remote sensing tools and geographic information systems. My main areas of expertise are: landscape and community ecology; vegetation dynamics, land use and land cover change; agroecological zoning; biodiversity assessment; and ecology of grasslands, neotropical savannas and tropical forests.

In a scenario of population growth, climate instability and geopolitical tensions, food security has returned to the center of the global agenda. Brazil has consolidated itself as one of the largest exporters of grains and proteins in the world, frequently described as the "breadbasket of the planet". This panel discusses whether this role is inevitable, desirable or needs to be redefined.
